Korean Mountainscape

Large 19th century Korean landscape of Chinese ink and colors on silk, recently remounted in Shanghai. This Shanshui painting is a rocky shoreline landscape of breaking waves against towering cliffs. This is a traditional image in Korean art, showing an austere kind of landscape. It does have some similarity to the Chinese classical model with the addition of the pavilion or temple roof nestled in a valley shrouded in clouds, and small outcroppings with pine growing from the top. This is a painting that also incorporates the image of the elegant sweep of a flock of cranes. Perhaps here it may indicate a season of the year, but overall it gives a sense of compositional movement against this austere and dramatic mountainscape.
