About This Artwork

This Jigoku Tayu scroll is a Taisho Period (1912-1926) Nihonga school painting of the Hell Courtesan. She was foul-mouthed, and this presents her painting blood as lipstick. The evil roosters, derived from a Nara period painting, are shown chasing human figures in hell as displayed on the kimono. This is a result of two artists in a horrible fight after an unsuccessful painting collaboration. What an incredible painting of a fight between two artists, Kainosho Tadaoto and Okamoto Shinso! The face is that of Kainosho Tadaoto!
