About John Melville Kelly

John Melville Kelly (1879–1962), born in Oakland, California, was an American painter and printmaker. He began his art studies at the Mark Hopkins Institute and Partington Art School before establishing himself in the Bay Area of San Francisco. Later, Kelly moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he became the head of the art department at the Star Bulletin. Known for his illustrations, etchings and aquatints. Kelly often depicted female figures, frequently with themes connected to Polynesian culture.
