"Hibashira" Basket sculpture

A powerful interplay of form and tension, Hibashira by Jiro Yonezawa captures the visual sensation of a rising flame. Combining charred madake bamboo with iron, the work reflects both the fragility and strength of nature.

Born in Oita, Japan, Yonezawa trained in traditional bamboo techniques before spending nearly two decades in Portland, Oregon. His time abroad deeply influenced his sculptural and abstract approach to basketry.

His works have been exhibited internationally and are included in both public and private collections, such as the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia and the Portland Art Museum in the U.S.
