This painting depicts a young Japanese woman with her child underneath a mosquito net. In the background, you can see the scenery of Lake Ashinoko. The painting remained in Charles Bartlett’s house for many years, even after his death, so it must have been one of his favorite pieces. Of course, Charles Bartlett lost his first wife and child in childbirth. This was such a deep grief for him that, for the rest of his life, he painted mother and child over and over again. It was the subject he was most endeared to. This work is watercolor, pastel, and graphite on paper. It was once in the collection of Mrs. Rosalind Schmidt, then in a Japanese collection, and now it is in my collection.

An original watercolor and pastel painting on paper by Charles W. Bartlett. A charming scene of a young Japanese mother checking on her infant son who is sleeping atop a mosquito-net covered futon.

Provenance: Rosalind Schmidt Estate

Ms. Schmidt was the niece of Charles Bartlett and this painting was discovered in Bartlett’s old home in Manoa, Hawaii. An old label reads: Vault Storage #247-C Rosalind B. Schmidt – Est. Haw’n Trust Co., Ltd. -Exec. 3/22/62 2008 to Present: Private collection in Japan
