A breathtaking large-scale work that captures the raw energy and mythical beauty of Hawaiʻi’s volcanic spirit.
Created using a suminagashi-inspired marbling technique, the artist floated sumi ink and acrylic pigments on the surface of water. At just the right moment, silk was carefully lifted into contact with the pigment—capturing an organic and unpredictable flow of color and form.
This “well-planned accident” results in a powerful, almost spiritual image—evoking molten lava, steam, and elemental movement.
This work reflects Andy Kay’s practiced approach to combining sumi and acrylic.
