Contemporary Chinese landscape scroll that was a gift to Senator Hiram L. Fong from Hawaii. Provided with the painting is an official letter of evaluation by Professor Emeritus Cai Xing Yi. Professor Cai was Director of Ancient Fine Arts Research Section and Chairman of Department of Art History of Graduate School – University of Beijing, China.

Evaluation by Cai Xing Yi reads:

This painting was signed by the painter; it also has the following two seals: “Wu Yong Chuan”, and “Ou Po Guan (House of Gulls and Waves)”. In the upper part of the painting, written by Xie Dong Min, a former high ranking Taiwan government official, there are eight characters stating: “Coming from a distant origin, the river flows far; the pine trees are ever greener contrasted against the red maple leaves.” It is also written that the painting was gifted to Hiram L. Fong, US Senator from Hawaii in 1974.

The painter combined realism and Western water color techniques. The style is similar to that of Zhao You Po, a Taiwan artist of early twentieth century. Wu Yong Chuan, an immigrant Taiwan artist in the US may have been one of Po’s students.
