The Miao people are a linguistically and culturally related group of people dating back two millennia and recognized by the Government of China as an official ethnic minority. They live primarily in southern China in the provinces of Hunan, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Guangxi.

They are renowned for the production of beautiful and distinctive textiles – with superlative silk embroidery, brocading, and batik often in geometric patterns decorated with flowers, birds, and animals from the surrounding landscape.

Some of the most gorgeous examples of Miao textiles come from women’s festival costumes. Elaborately embroidered pieces are attached to jacket sleeves, fronts, or backs, or sometimes worked directly on the jacket or pleated skirt.

Important collections such as the British Museum’s consider the Miao textiles a major living art form of this enduring ethnic culture.
