Taisho Period (1912-1926) moutainscape painting on silk. This marvelous painting of a snowy scene on bluffs over a body of water also shows several figures crossing the body of water on a bridge of some kind which is amply covered with snow. The rocks and foliage of the area show the white form overall, yet the trees along the bluffs and mountains are in that spikey black form of naked trees in the landscape of winter. Unfortunately, the artist did not leave us a signature. We must assume that he was an accomplished artist in as much as the painting is an extremely fine example of the Taisho taste.

Taisho period is deeply involved in and influenced by what is called the Nihonga school. It is a school of art in Japan that is interested in portraying the etherial aspect of landscape and distance with measured and graduated washes across the surface of the painting. The lines in this painting are dexterous and deft.
