The startling image that comes forth from the center of this painting is Fudo Myo-o. He holds a sword to subdue evil, and a lasso to bind the ignorant. Behind him burns the flame that consumes passion. Surrounding Fudo Myoo-o are Gozanze Myo-o, Gundari Yasha Myo-o, Daitoku Myo-o, and Kongo Yasha Myo-o. “Myo-o” means king of light or wisdom. Originally these deities were Hindu that were adopted as Buddhist paragons.
