	This painting depicts the Esoteric deity Aizen Myo-o, or 'Aizen the Wisdom King'. His function is to transform human passions into a vehicle for Enlightenment. The primary sutra related to this deity is the Kongoburokaku Issai Ygaya Gikyo. This text was translated into Chinese in the early eighth century by the Indian monk Vajrabodhi. Worship of Aizen Myo-o was introduced into Japan by Kobo Daishi in the early ninth century.
