Enquire About Ma Gu
It is Fang Chunnian. Date is 13th ~ 16thC. Purchased originally in Taiwan in 1972. Remounted. At that time at the National Palace Museum Taiwan.
This is a painting of Ma Gu. She is a very well known Daoist immortal. She usually carries a peach. She is a compassionate deity that helped an old woman survive instead of feeding her own family. Associated with the elixir of life.
This painting has all of the elements of longevity symbols, Ling Zhi fungus, deer and peach. It is a common theme for paintings of Ma Gu giving a Birthday wish. It is very interesting in that it also shows very early forms of Chinese baskets, which do not survive today. One even has a vase in it , representing peace.
The seal at the top is an Imperial seal and there are many collector seals throughout the painting. Fang Chunnian was an Imperial Court painter. We are not sure of authenticity, but is surely at least Ming Dynasty in date. The painting quality is on par with Fang Chunnian. Very fine and could very well be by him.
