This particular piece is an incredible sandstone carving of a nude Hawaiian male in a kneeling pose, entirely hand-carved. It is comparable to her other works, such as the great mural at the Board of Water Supply and the stone water fountain at Kawananakoa School. She unfortunately passed away at the young age of 41 while traveling in Mexico, thus her carvings are rare.

About Marguerite Blasingame

Marguerite Blasingame (1906–1947), was an American sculptor and painter who earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Hawaii and her Masters of Art from Stanford University. Blasingame was an established sculptor in figural works, known for her bas-reliefs in wood and stone depicting simplified anatomy. She was also a WPA artist. Her works are a rare “Art Deco” style and explore decorative patterns with natural forms, blending elements of tropical foliage and stylized representation of Hawaiian figures. She was influential in the community by helping establish the “Hawaii Mural Arts Guild” in 1934. Unfortunately her life was cut short at the age of 41 on a trip to Mexico. Several of Blasingame’s sculptures can be found throughout Honolulu, located in places such as the Honolulu Museum of Art, Ala Moana Park, and Board of Water Supply.
