Early Meiji Period (1868-1912) silver compass & sun dial netsuke. Mariners need compasses and time to calculate distance and position. This netsuke has a compass and a sundial that can be used for these purposes. The case is silver with an incised design of dragon emerging from clouds. The other side has a scene of roiling clouds.
