In 1954 Murray Turnbull arrived in Hawaii to teach at the University of Hawaii (Honolulu). He taught there for over 25 years and during this time, founded the renowned East-West Centre in Honolulu \u201cto strengthen relations and understanding among the peoples and nations of Asia, the Pacific and the United States\u201d. He is known as a modernist artist, often using bright colors. He left teaching in 1985 and continued creating art for decades from his studio in Manoa Valley.
